RVSM Height Monitoring Flights

Flying in RVSM airspace helps save fuel and reduces flight level congestion. With the increase in airspace usage each year, the airspace rules must evolve to maintain air travel safety. Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM) was put into action to provide enhanced safety features.

To verify that aircraft are checked to be safe in RVSM airspace, RVSM implementation includes a requirement for a height-keeping performance check for aircraft that fly between FL 290-410. Aircraft RVSM Monitoring assesses the technical risk of the aircraft operating in the RVSM airspace. If the aircraft height-keeping performance is maintained within the expected error tolerance, the aircraft is considered safe for RVSM flight and should pose no additional risk to other aircraft operating in RVSM.

Once the aircraft has been determined safe to fly in RVSM airspace, the next step to maintain a safe operating environment is to comply with the 24 month monitoring check to uphold the level of safety.

SERVICE

RVSMMonitoring

Sigma Aviation offers competitively priced RVSM Monitoring Services, sending our technicians directly to you locally in order to minimize the cost and give more flexibility to you and your customers. After the flight, we coordinate directly with your Regional Monitoring Agency to provide the monitoring data and track the results.

Sigma Aviation will bring a portable GPS based monitoring system (GMU), developed by CSSI, Inc especially for RVSM Monitoring, to verify that the attitude keeping systems in the aircraft are compliant to fly in RVSM airspace. A Sigma RVSM Specialist will bring the briefcase-sized, portable GMU on board the aircraft prior to the flight. To acquire GPS satellite telemetry the specialist will install duel GPS antennas with suction cups on the cabin or cockpit windows.

The monitoring flight requires approximately 30 minutes of straight and level flight between FL290-FL410. Our RVSM Specialist then processes the collected data and submits it to the RMA, regional technical center, for review. The RMA analyzes the Altimetry System Error (ASE) rating which is then used to determine RVSM airspace certification.
